The Government Guarantees 2.5 billion Euros

The Prime Minister, Jean-Pierre Raffarin, has signed the engagement of the State for Paris 2012. A necessary and important guarantee in the progress of the candidature to organise the 2012 Games. This support joins that of the Ile-de-France region and the City of Paris.

The signature took place at the Hotel Matignon.  Jean-Pierre Raffarin signed, in the name of the State, to give 2.5 billion euros to contribute financially to the Paris 2012 project.  A "guarantee to success" said the Prime Minister.

"Paris is the capital of France, therefore it is the candidature of France", said Jean-Pierre Raffarin.  The Head of the Government gave his vision of the competition: "We have entered a sort of World Championships and we want to win whilst practicing the Olympic Spirit."

Present at this important meeting for the candidacy were several other Government members interested in the Bid: Dominique de Villepin (Interior), Michel Barnier (Foreign Affairs), Gilles de Robien (Transport), Léon Bertrand (Tourism), Dominique Bussereau (Budget), Marie-Anne Montchamp (People with a disability).

The signing of these guarantees of the state contributes as well to the aspects of security, greater accessibility for people with a disability, environmental safeguards and a mechanism for issuing entry visas to foreign visitors.

Last week, the Paris City council voted to provide similar financial guarantees of 1.27 billion Euro for the project. The Paris regional authority (Council of the Ile-de-France Region) has also committed just over 1 billion Euro.
