La Rochelle Illuminates “L’Amour des Jeux” as the Bidding for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games Enters its Final 100 Days

100 days before the International Olympic Committee selects the host city of the XXXth Olympiad on 6 July 2005, the old port in the French city of La Rochelle will bring L’Amour des Jeux alive in a spectacular and theatrical show of support for the Paris 2012 candidature.

On Monday March 28th, La Rochelle, the proposed site of the sailing competition if Paris is selected to host the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, will illuminate the two towers that frame the port entrance which will display a symbolic "clock" counting down the days to the final IOC vote. A dramatic water wall between the two ancient
structures will be unleashed, the cascading water serving as a unique screen for projected images of the Paris 2012 venues. The towers will remain lit until 6 July.

Karen Leibovici, Benoît Parnaudeau, Marc Thiercelin and Dominique Wavre, four sailors from La Rochelle who took part in the Vendée Globe Race 2004-2005 (the sailing race around the world, for singlehanders, without any stopover), will launch the event navigating through the water wall on board their sailboat commencing a lap of honor in the Old Port.

La Rochelle offers an ideal sailing competition venue, thanks to a world famous open water basin and its state-of-the-art Port des Minimes, host to several international sailing and regatta competitions, which welcomes tens of thousands of aquatic enthusiasts every year.

The commemoration of the countdown will take place at 7.30 pm at the La Rochelle old port on the 28th of March and will include a fireworks display.
