Parisians park up in favour of public transport

Parisians are foregoing their cars in favour of public transport, according to a new report, underlining Paris 2012ís commitment to provide superb transport facilities should they win the vote to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Whilst the use of cars has increased in most French cities, initiatives in Paris have promoted better and more frequent use of public transport, according to the latest influential Cour des Comptes report.
With public transport provisions a major element of the Paris 2012 Olympic Bid, the news underlines the impressive infrastructure already in place.
New bus lanes, wider pavements, reduced parking facilities at higher prices and a boulevard tramway have all contributed to reducing Parisís road usage by almost ten per cent.
"This report emphasises Parisís commitment to public transport and demonstrates that they can comfortably handle the increased use of buses and trains", said Panos Protsopaltis, ATHOC Transport General Manager and Paris 2012 consultant. "Paris has already shown that it can cope with increasing demands from all accredited persons, spectators and visitors during international events such as the FIFA World Cup í98 and the IAAF Athletics World Championships in 2003. Paris has a user-friendly, comfortable and reliable transport system."
Paris 2012 has already announced plans to introduce low-emission buses, 20,000 of free bicycles and cycle paths, additional river shuttles and an extension to the Metro network.
The City of Paris encourages the use of public transport and†"eco-mobility with the use of cars dropping to less than 35 per cent in favour of public transport by 2012.
The Olympic bid has also vowed to provide complete public transport access for disabled travelers.

∑ City of Paris aim to reduce private vehicle use has proved successful. Traffic levels dropped by 11% between 1997 and 2002 with a further drop of 5% between 2002 and 2003.
