Record entry for 29th Paris Marathon to wear colours of Paris 2012
A record number of 35,000 athletes will gather on the Champs-Elysées this Sunday, April 10th, to take part in the 29th Paris Marathon, proudly wearing the colours of Paris 2012.
This record level of participation, along with an expected crowd of 200,000 spectators, will further position the 29th Paris Marathon as one of the top road races of its kind in the world, while at the same time demonstrating Parisians’ increasing enthusiasm for sport.
All competitors, including the 6,000 athletes who will travel to France from 77 countries around the world, will wear race bibs adorned with the Paris 2012 motto "L’Amour des Jeux". Competitors and spectators will also be able to enjoy the sights and monuments of the French capital decorated with Paris 2012 illuminations and artwork along the 42,195 km race, which began in 1896 a few months after the first Modern Olympics were held in Athens.
With less than three months to go before the final decision is made by the International Olympic Committee in Singapore, the spectators encouraging athletes along the course will show the passion and "L'Amour des Jeux" that unites the entire French nation behind the city’s bid to host the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Henri Sérandour, President of the French National Olympic Committee, said: "It is the passion shown by the sportspersons and spectators that makes this such a wonderful event. This is a world-class competition with international appeal that not only demonstrates the support and solidarity of Parisians, but also their willingness to welcome those from around the world into this beautiful city".
Frenchman Lahssini El Hassan, who is amongst the favorites of the race, said: "I decided to take part in the Paris Marathon because it is a fantastic race and this year we will run wearing the colours of Paris 2012. I am a strong supporter of the Bid and I want the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games to come to Paris. By running in this event I can show my support. Paris deserves it so much!"
