L’amour des Jeux got four times stronger at ‘SportAccord’ today, with the German quadruple Olympic Champion, Birgit Fischer, joining the Paris 2012 stand to offer an athlete’s perspective of the Paris 2012 bid. The canoeing champion, who has participated in six Olympic Games over 20 years, praised the French bid team on a plan which she believes will guarantee athletes an amazing Olympic experience in Paris 2012.

Talking with the Paris 2012 bid team for over an hour, Birgit highlighted that the Paris 2012 ‘One village, Two Clusters’ design is an innovative concept that meets the athlete’s professional and personal needs.

Birgit said: “It’s obvious that the ‘One Village, Two Clusters’ concept has been developed by athletes for athletes. Not only does it meet important needs such as ease of travel to and from events, training facilities, a clean environment and central accommodation, but it recognizes the athlete’s human desire to relax, travel and enjoy exploring a new City”.

“The Olympic Village is within ten minutes of 80% of the venues, and at the same time, athletes are minutes away from the heart of the City and its fantastic landmarks. Paris’ amazing ambience and beautiful environment, coupled with the spirit of Olympism, will produce what I believe will be the most magical Olympic event”.

“It really does not surprise me that the Paris bid has covered every aspect of the athletes needs. It was Paris that pioneered athlete accommodation in the 1924 Olympic Games. It was that same event that saw the birth of canoeing as an Olympic Sport! Paris played an instrumental role in the development of the two things that I hold close to my heart and I’m honored to now help Paris pursue its own Olympic dream”.
